Textbook is the carrier of concepts and contents,resulting from the sociocultural choice.While disseminating knowledge,the character images in textbooks,which reflect and express the contents of the textbook,also contain the value orientation of that time and reflect the shaping and expectation of education to students’ habits,morals and values,etc.Therefore,it is an important perspective to analyze the value orientation of textbooks by studying the character images in textbooks.This paper proceeds according to the development of the Chinese textbooks of primary school,which is divided into three periods: the late Qing Dynasty,the early time of Republic of China and 20 thcentury of 20 s and 30 s.Starting from analyzing the backgrounds of primary school’s Chinese textbooks at different times,this paper aims to explore the value orientation which contains in character images by focusing on describing the main characters in textbooks of different stages.Eventually,it is supposed to summarize the experience of choosing character images in the Chinese textbooks of that time and put forward some using suggestions for today,such as focusing on both of the demands of times and the excellent traditional culture of China,editing textbooks from the perspective of children and adapting to the situation of children’s physical and mental development,reflecting the diversity of character images and presenting in multiply and life-oriented ways,etc.
