Vocabulary,as the basic meaningful unit of language,is essential for language learners.To master vocabulary proficiently is the basis to learn English well for English learners.Most information in our daily communicative discourse is delivered by fixed or semi-fixed language units.These language units which contain phrases,collocations and sentence structure are called lexical chunks.The typical representative of lexical chunks approach is Micheal Lewis(1993).According to Lewis' theory,the lexical chunks are the corn of language.It is helpful on better vocabulary comprehension,increasing the efficiency of memorization and promotion of communication ability if regard chunks as input units when learning vocabulary.The students in junior high school are at the beginning stage of English learning.Therefore,it is crucial for them to master effective method to memorize and use vocabulary.However,it is a prevalent phenomenon that most English teachers teach vocabulary isolated and mechanically in the current teaching circumstance.The participants of this research are the students from Class Four Grade Seven in No.18 Junior High School.The purpose of the research is to know the effect of lexical-chunk approach on vocabulary learning.The research questions are as follows: Does the vocabulary learning by lexical chunks help students raise their awareness of English word collocation? Does it help strengthen their vocabulary memorization Does it help improve their use of words properly? If the answer is yes,then how does learning by chunks do to achieve the learning goal of vocabulary learning?Based on the students' vocabulary ability and students' cognition characteristics,the author designs two vocabulary tests to examine students' vocabulary change after the implementation of lexical-chunk approach.Questionnaires and interview are also applied in the research for data collection.According to the result of research,lexical-chunk approach does help students raise their awareness of English word collocation and help strengthen their vocabulary memorization.It does help improve students' use of words properly.The thesis consists of six parts.Chapter one is the background of the study.The significance of study and the layout of study are also included.Chapter two contains the definition of lexical chunks and the classification of lexical chunks.In this chapter,the author also displayed the related literature.The research question,research participants research instruments and research plan are introduced in Chapter three.Chapter four contain the research procedure of applying lexical chunks approach in English vocabulary teaching.Chapter four refers to the data analysis.Chapter six involves the conclusion of this research,pedagogical implication,the limitation of the research and the suggestions for further research.
