| Vocabulary constitutes a major difficulty to Chinese students and teachers of English alike. Vocabulary teaching and learning have both been found to be demanding and time-consuming. And yet despite the enormous efforts being put into this endeavor, the results are never entirely satisfactory. This is particularly true of English teaching and learning in the Junior Vocational School, where the students complain incessantly of the heavy burden imposed on them by their need to acquire a vocabulary in English. To address this problem, and to render it easier for learning English words, innovative approaches are badly needed.One of the more promising approaches to the study of vocabulary is through the use of lexical chunks. The study in lexical chunks has attracted the attention of researches and instructors in the linguistic field since the beginning of last century. More and more linguists, teachers and learners have begun to look at chunks as a key factor in successful language learning and as important building blocks of coherent discourse and characteristic features of successful language use.This study is to describe how the applying the lexical chunks to teaching and learning English vocabulary in the Junior Vocational School. The author introduces "the Lexical Chunks Approach" to the students, which is based on the analysis of the current status of vocabulary teaching and learning. Using the Lexical Chunks' Approach aims at helping students form the habit of the awareness of lexical chunks in English vocabulary learning to improve the efficiency of vocabulary learning, thereby promoting their English learning. A series of research findings are won. The result shows that lexical approach proves to be of great value for English vocabulary teaching and learning in the Junior Vocational School. |
