Classroom teaching is one kind of the traditional teaching ways. But the discrepancy between the students is always a big problem, which is difficult to be solved. The discrepancy between the students has become one of the difficult points of teaching. People are trying their best to find a better way to solve the problem of the teaching model in a classroom. After analyzing the current situation of English teaching in the school and studying about the reform practice in China and other countries, the author decides to go on the experiment on stratified teaching in her English classes. The stratified teaching methodology is in accordance with the theory of materialism and dialectic principle, and also in conformity to the pedagogical theories. It takes the students’ psychology of learning into consideration. It is compatible with the principle of teaching students in accordance with their aptitude and the principle of acceptability. So it has an extensive theoretic basis.The purpose of the thesis is to improve the current situation of English teaching by applying stratified teaching mode to English teaching in Class Four, Grade Eight, in Guiyang NO.21 Middle School. And in order to find out the teaching effect, the author chooses its parallel class-Class Two as the controlled class. The experiment is kept for one year. Before and after the experiment, two test papers(pre-test paper and post-test paper) are used to investigate students’ performances on English achievement. According to the experiments, stratified teaching in English is more effective in improving students’ interest of learning English and is more effective of the examinations’ results than the traditional teaching mode. The stratified teaching methodology is based on the premises that there are differences among the students. The stratified teaching is carried out to all the students in the same classroom. The thesis consists of five parts. The first part tells the background of the stratified teaching in English, the purpose and significance of the study, the contents of the study and the definitions in the study. The second part covers the theoretical frameworks of stratified English teaching and the previous researches both in China and aboard on it. The third part indicates how to carry out stratified teaching in English classroom. The fourth part discusses the results of the teaching effect. The fifth part is the conclusion and puts forward its limitations and gives some suggestions to further studies.
