Mathematical reading is an important way to learn mathematics.At present,the domestic theoretical studies on mathematical reading and its achievements are ceaselessly expanding.Through the analysis of related researches,the author has found that most of the studies on mathematical reading were conducted from the perspective of pedagogy,focusing on the teaching,methods and ability cultivation of mathematical reading and that the studies on the factors influencing the mathematical reading were mostly undertaken from psychology,such as individual CPFS structure,self-monitoring,graphical representation and analogy.Mathematics teaching is actually the teaching of mathematical language,which can be categorized into written language,sign language and graphic language.There are many factors that can have influence on the student's mathematical reading,among which the understanding of the mathematical symbols,an important factor,has not been thoroughly researched so far.Based on the existing theories,the author has proposed her own understanding of mathematical symbols,and the theoretical and operational definition of mathematical reading.She has divided mathematical symbols into symbol recognition,speech analysis and sense making,and mathematical reading into character encoding,language translation and comprehension,according to which she has made the test paper for the mathematical reading and the understanding of mathematical symbols so that the further research can be conducted to the current situation of the understanding of the mathematical symbols.By doing the analysis of collected data,the author has drawn the following conclusions:(1)As to the understanding of mathematical symbols,the present situation of senior high school students is not very well and there is no significant difference in gender.The difference between the grade one and the other two grades is remarkable and the sharp difference between the grade two and the grade three exists in the understanding of mathematical symbols.In general,the relationship between the understanding ability of mathematical symbols and the grades is inversely proportional.The attitude of mathematicsteacher towards the teaching of mathematical symbols will exert a great influence on students' attitudes and the students' interests in learning mathematics are closely related to the interests in mathematical symbols learning.(2)The correlation between the understanding of mathematical symbols in senior high school and mathematical reading is obviously positive.(3)The students who have a good understanding of mathematical symbols usually have a good mathematical reading ability and vice versa.(4)The level of understanding of mathematical symbols can,to a great extent,reflect the ability of mathematical reading.At last,based on the analysis of research results,the author has proposed the teaching strategies for the improvement of senior high school students' mathematical reading ability.
