Listening,speaking,reading and writing are four basic language skills of communication.Of the four language skills,writing entirely reveals a learner’s language level.Therefore,English writing plays an important role in English teaching course.The"New Curriculum Standards" divides the writing ability into 9 levels,and it requires that junior school students should reach level 5.However,some students have no interests,little confidence and lack of ability in English writing.It’s difficult for them to reach the teaching goal..In order to develop students’ interests and confidence,change their attitudes toward writing,promote their writing skills,the author tried to combine process approach and product approach together,and applied the process-product approach to English writing.The study tried to deal with the following three questions:1.Can the process-product approach increase students’ interests,enhance their confidence and change their attitudes toward English writing?2.Can the process-product approach change students’ opinions toward English writing?3.Can the process-product approach improve students’ writing skills?To solve these problems,the author carried out the experiment in Tianxingqiao Middle School.The subjects were students from 2 parallel classes in Grade 3.Class 6 was randomly chosen as the experimental class,and Class 3 was the control class.The writing lessons were taken every two weeks in the whole school year.The experimental class was taught with the process-product approach while the control class was taught with the product approach.The following instruments are used in this study:two questionnaires before and after the experiment to find out the students’ interests,confidence,attitudes and opinions;pretest,mid-test and post-test to find students’performance in writing.The researcher collected some data and analyzed them.According to the data,the process-product approach is helpful to the students in increasing interests and enhancing confidence.This approach changes students’ attitudes and opinions toward writing,which means students pay more attention to content rather than language forms.The process-product approach is also an effective way of improving students’ writing competence.
