In today’s rapidly changing society, the society’s requirements on different roles keep changing. For the retired elderly in cities, after leaving work, they are more vulnerable to role conflict and tend to widen the role deviation due to lack of social contact and communication, which has become the realistic foundation of the need for retired urban people to adjust their roles. This paper, based on the analysis on the current role adjustment of the retired urban elderly, found out the problems and the causes of role adjustment, and made a comparison with traditional adjustment methods to highlight the unique function of social work intervention.Through field investigation and interviews,a typical case was selected for case intervention study. On the basis of the results of study and judgment on the case protagonist A’s demand, and in accordance with the process of social working practice,a plan was formulated and implemented. The study found that discovering the retired urban elderly who had not successfully adjusted their roles was the premise of social work intervention, while carrying out demand judgment on the retired urban elderly in need of role adjustment was the key for social work intervention.Compared with other retired elderly in other cities, the advantageous cultural background and open attitude of case protagonist A was the foundation to achieve social work intervention. In the role adjustment process of retired urban elderly,it is necessary to mobilize their subjective wishes, strengthen their contacts with families, introduce relevant policies and provide related support.Only in this way can it help those elderly to successfully finish the role adjustment and enjoy their life as senior citizens.
