As the extension of textbook learning,extracurricular reading is the embodiment of students' reading ability and learning ability,is the source of effective knowledge acquisition,is the cornerstone of human's all-round development,and is an inevitable requirement in competence education.The new curriculum revolution also strengthen the importance of extracurricular reading,pointed out that the primary reading should be not less than one million four hundred and five thousand words.For rural boarding pupils,extracurricular reading is especially an important way to optimize the mind,broaden the horizons and cultivate the temperament because they are in a closed management mode for a long time,with relatively little contact with the outside world.In terms of theoretical analysis,there are many advantages in the development of students' extracurricular reading ability in rural boarding primary schools.However,students' extracurricular reading ability is not satisfactory due to many factors.Therefore,it is of great practical significance to study the cultivation of the students' reading ability in rural boarding schools.In order to understand their ability of extracurricular reading situation,six rural boarding pupils of different levels in Lincheng County of Hebei Province were investigated by questionnaire and interview on the basis of summarizing the related literature at home and abroad.This paper explores the strategies of improving the reading ability of rural boarding students through the research and analysis.First of all,this paper makes an investigation on the present situation of the students' reading ability in rural boarding schools from four dimensions: the ability of selecting reading,reading regulation,reading comprehension,and the ability to transfer and apply.This paper sums up the problems existing in the rural boarding students' reading ability on the basis of sorting out and analyzing the results of the survey: the selection of reading materials is blind and utilitarian;lack of reading methods,pupils cannot adjust the reading strategy;the lack of overall understanding and misunderstanding of whole idea of a text;the understanding of the word's meaning is mainly based on the literal meaning,and the lack of situational binding ability;they doesn't know how to transfer extracurricular reading;the effect of extracurricular reading transformation is not good.And this paper will analyze the influence factors from three aspects of school,teachers and students.: school has less attention of extracurricular reading;teachers' lead is not enough;students have bad reading habits.For these reasons and problems,the paper puts forward some strategies to improve the reading ability of rural boarding students on the basis of the above research: first,the school should take fully advantage of cultivating extra-curricular reading ability;secondly,students should develop good reading habits;thirdly,teachers should improve the effectiveness of extracurricular reading guidance;finally,we should create an extracurricular reading environment to improve pupils' extracurricular reading ability.
