Along with the ongoing school curriculum reform, cooperative learning has been applied more and more in senior high schools' teaching.Cooperative learning has brought a lot of benefits to English teaching, including arousing students' interest and allowing students to learn through exploration. However, there are still some problems in cooperative learning which have limited its potential benefits that it can bring to the high school English teaching.Through multiple research techniques including observing, interviewing, and literature research, the author studied the existing problems in current high school cooperative English teaching and proposed corresponding strategies. This thesis includes four parts and takes one senior high school in Yibin County as an example.Part I represents the reason why the author chooses this research topic, the study objectives and research significance, and the current research progress on cooperative learning,as well as the study methods. In the second part, taking one high school in Yibin County as an example, the author analyzes the existing problems in English cooperative learning on both sides of teachers and students. The problems in teachers' aspect are a lack of true cooperation and not to give enough chance to students to participate. Those in students' aspect are not enough motivations for students to participate and to communicate in Chinese instead of English. The author then explored the underlying causes of these problems:the teaching is still fast paced in order to meet the curriculum requirement;the idea of traditional one-side teaching is still deeply rooted given by the current score-based examination system;there's a lack of matching between the design of cooperative learning and the students' knowledge and cognition level which is a barrier in arousing students' interest;the teacher's teaching techniques and proficiency with the course materials need to be further improved;there's preference of studying alone and unwillingness to participate in cooperative learning among some students and lastly, the students lack of enough words for communication in English. In the third part, the author proposes strategies of improving and strengthening cooperative learning: to emphasize the importance and potential benefits of cooperative learning to both teachers and students;to transform the traditional teaching philosophy;for teachers to incorporate and integrate the teaching materials and course documents;to familiarize themselves with the vocabulary required before cooperation for better communication;to design the assignment of cooperative learning properly so that it fits the students' English level in order to fully engage students and to improve students' abilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing and interpreting;to motivate students by enriching the formats of cooperative learning by the means of listening, speaking, reading, writing and interpreting, providing evaluation from multiple perspectives including from their psychological development and the aspects of listening, speaking, reading, writing and interpreting. In the last part, from the pilot experiences of applying cooperative learning in one senior high school in Yibin county, the author provides feedback on the effectiveness of cooperative learning in high school English teaching practices.
