Textbook is a kind of teaching tool,which has a good relationship with the teaching processes.It gives teachers many teaching guidances.It also provides students with stable development direction.As an important symbol of textbook reform,the illustration is one of the most important components of the textbooks.Oral English teaching is a very important and weak link in secondary vocational English teaching.The English achievements of students are not good enough.Their spoken English and communicative abilities are relatively weak.It is the key to cultivating and improving students' ability through the oral training with systematic material.The all-around rational use of textbook is the most direct and convenient way.In order to improve the vocational oral English teaching,the research aims at cultivating the vocational students' abilities by using textbook illustration.The research tries to solve the following questions: what effect does the textbook illustration have on students' learning anxiety? Can the students' English conversation ability be improved?The research is carried on by questionnaire,experiment and observation.This research adopts "English"(volume 1,2)as one of the research materials.At the same time,this research chooses two parallel level classes of 2015 freshmen for one semester experiment and observation.According to the PETS 2,the present study can verifies that the illustration teaching has positive effect on students' learning anxiety and English conversation ability.The results show that:(1)Through the data collection of questionnaire survey and the process of classroom observation,we have found that textbook illustrations have a great influence on students' learning anxiety.One third students' anxiety in oral English communication is greatly reduced.Thus their interest in oral English learning is enhanced.(2)By PETS data analysis,textbook illustrations play a positive role in improving students' English conversation ability.After one semester experiment,the oral exam scores in the experimental class are higher than that in comparative classes by nearly 10 points.And the experimental class is in small scale polarization.The communicative competence of students in experimental class is balanced and strengthened.Therefore,teachers should pay full attention to systematic study of the functions and characteristics of the textbook illustrations,the creative use of the textbook,and the reasonable combination of language practice with the teaching activities.
