Gymnastics courses are compulsory in elementary and secondary schools and boast of great values for students’ physical and mental health.New curriculum of gymnastics courses has been implemented for five years,while the operational effect is not optimistic.Therefore,an objective view about the courses operation situation in Yantai junior middle schools,a change in traditional gymnastics courses teaching ideology,the enhancement of PE teaching enthusiasm,and the corresponding countermeasures,these all have significant reference value for the operation and carry-out of gymnastics courses in junior middle schools in Yantai.In this study,the present situation of "gymnastics" in junior middle schools of Yantai was studied by means of literature,questionnaire,statistics and field investigation.The present study is conducted among physical education teachers and their leaders in 20 middle schools in Yantai.The questionnaire surveys and analyses are carried out,including the implementation and understanding of the new curriculum standards,the development of "gymnastics" in PE teaching,and its teaching contents,teaching methods,evaluation methods,site equipment,influencing factors,and the basic situation of physical education teachers,etc.With a comprehensive understanding of the project status of gymnastics education in the junior middle schools of Yantai districts,the conclusions are as follows:1.Yantai City Board of Education attaches great importance to the implementation of the new curriculum.The selection of junior middle school sports textbooks shows consistency,and the textbook "Sports and Health" published by Shandong Education Press,which is based on 5-4 system of compulsory education is widely used.The majority of physical education teachers know it is right,and support the implementation of the new curriculum.2.Although the urban junior middle schools in Yantai have opened the "gymnastics " project courses,the teaching of "gymnastics " project is not carried out properly,not conducive to the overall development of students’ body and mind.The fact that "gymnastics" teaching is given less teaching time can not make sure that "gymnastics " teaching is carried out properly.3.Among "gymnastics " projects,the basic gymnastics gets attention,and the situation of queue formation and free hand gymnastics is better;the situation of light equipment gymnastics is overall poor,and rope skipping is the best to be carried out;the situation of practical gymnastics is relatively poor;the situation of the horizontal bar events except pull-up is very poor;the situation of parallel bars and jump movements is very poor,almost in discarded state;the situation of the skill action is so so;the situation of the rhythmic gymnastics and the dance is very poor.4.The junior middle schools in the districts of Yantai have qualified sports teachers.However,the main issue lies in the imbalance between male and female ones.Very few teachers are from the gymnastics field,which is a disadvantage to the development of “gymnastics class ".The physical education in terms of gymnastics is not solid enough.Although PE teachers may have clear teaching aims,they don’t have a comprehensive knowledge of teaching contents.This issue is reflected in the following aspects: teachers may have very different understandings about the importance of “gymnastics class";huge emphasis is on the fundamental gymnastics,not the competitive ones;rhythmic gymnastics and dancing are not taken seriously;the teaching methods in gymnastics are old-fashioned and lack of diversity;the evaluation system is onefold,mainly on their final performance,which is ineffective in stimulating them.5.The junior middle school students show a lack of interest in gymnastics classes.They don’t have a comprehensive knowledge of teaching contents.Moreover,the foundation of gymnastics education is weak,and varying levels exist in different districts.All these issues contribute to the underdevelopment of gymnastics education.6.The overall condition of the “gymnastics” program teaching area’s sports facilities of middle schools in the urban district of Yantai city is undesirable.The facilities can’t meet the need of "gymnastics” program teaching and there is a big difference among different regions.7.The factors which affect the “gymnastics” program teaching in the middle schools of the districts of Yantai city are as follows: the disputes caused by injury accidents in PE,safety factors,students’ physical quality,backward teaching area’s facilities,no gymnastics movement of PE in senior middle school entranceexaminations,students’ lack of interest and PE teachers’ teaching ability in the aspect of gymnastics.In addition,intervention of students’ parents and school administrators,ambiguity of movements in curriculum standards,teachers’ feeling at a loss about what to do and insufficient investment of school’s fund and so on,are also the factors which have impacted the implementation of “gymnastics” program teaching.According to the conducted survey,the following proposals,combined with relevant advices from sports experts,are offered:1.The country is to strengthen the construction of relevant laws and regulations of the sports teaching and actively promote the sports insurance system,and schools and sports teachers should cultivate the students’ safety consciousness,attaches great importance to the protection "gymnastics class" project teaching and assistance.2.To Perfect the gymnastics class teaching contents of the project,and actively increase "gymnastics class" teaching content of the project,especially the aerobics,light instrument gymnastics,the practical items such etc.3.The education departments at various levels should raise "gymnastics class" project site equipment investment,exploit and utilize the intramural sports facilities resources actively.4.More training on the teaching skills and professional theories of sports teachers in gymnastics-related sports.5.Vigorously promoting the reform of teaching methods and making scientific policy of teaching assessment.6.The educational departments of Yantai strengthening the research of the teaching materials about gymnastics-related sports for the purpose of compiling effective sports textbooks,and setting extra examinations of sports events such as sporting techniques and rope skipping in the Senior-middle school entrance examinations.7.The educational departments of Yantai attaching importance to the recruitment of the teacher majoring in gymnastics-related sports,especially female teachers in the field of dance and aerobics.
