School-based textbook, the carrier of school-based curriculum implementation, also the essential tools and recourses for teachers’ teaching and students’ self-study,has played an important role in the phase of school-based curriculum development and evaluation. So, how to position a school-based textbook? How to develop and make use of a school-based textbook? How to evaluate the effectiveness of a school-based textbook? How to avoid the problems of a school-based textbook? These questions need to be studied in the practice of developing school-based textbook by researchers and practitioners.The author chooses a school-based English textbook of a senior high school in Hainan Province as the object of study to investigate its effectiveness. First, understand the status quo of research on school-based textbook development and supporting theories on textbook development and evaluation through literature reading, based on which the framework for developing school-based textbook is summarized. Second, find out the characteristics of school-based textbook based on the observation of how the textbook is used and the textbook analysis. Third, investigate teachers and students’ feedback and evaluation on the textbook through questionnaire and interview.The findings show that the school-based textbook is in conformity with the requirement of New Curriculum Standards. It has clear and specific objectives and its contents are conducive to developing the students’ comprehensive ability. The rich activities in the textbook can largely satisfy teachers and students’ needs. It also reflects the characteristics of the school. In general, both the teachers and students think highly of the textbook. However,there are also some problems. For example, no formal pre-use student needs analysis, no timely adjustment and modification of teaching contents, inadequate teacher-student interaction on the issues of the textbook, student teachers’ lacking in teaching experience,insufficient class time, which has led to less satisfactory effect.The practice of developing school-based textbook in the school has set a good example for us in spite of the problems mentioned above. Based on the principles of developing and evaluating textbooks, the author raises the following proposals. First, following the general principles and developing routes of textbook development. Second, cooperating with expertsand integrating with other resources. Third, adjusting the textbook contents based on teachers and students’ needs. Fourth, considering cross-disciplinary connections and having them integrated in the school-based textbook. Fifth, laying emphasis on local features and school features of the textbook. Last, building a dynamic evaluation system. In summary, the development of a high qualified school-based textbook cannot be accomplished overnight. It is a process of constant generation. Hopefully, the thesis can inspire the researchers and practitioners in a sense.
