A number of studies on the relationship between short-term memory and vocabulary learning have been done by many scholars at home or abroad. They confirmed that there is a correlation between the short-term memory and vocabulary learning; with the separation of short-term memory into item memory and order memory, scholars set out to explore the relationship between vocabulary learning and short-term memory for item memory and order memory. The results showed that there is a correlation between vocabulary learning and short-term memory for item memory and order memory. And order memory plays a very important role in vocabulary learning.In this study, using the process-dissociation procedure to properly distinguish the contributions of item and order process to short-term memory, we explored the relationship between Chinese vocabulary learning and short-term memory for item memory and order memory.This study includes two experiments. Experiment1 used a paired-associate learning paradigm testing the ability of Chinese ideograph learning to explore the relation between the Chinese ideograph learning and short-term memory for item memory and order memory. The results show that there is a high correlation between the Chinese ideograph learning and order memory, but no relationship between item memory and Chinese ideograph learning.Experiment 2 used paired-associate learning paradigm testing the ability of Chinese phonetic learning to explore the relation between the vocabulary of Chinese Phonetics Learning and short-term memory for item memory and order memory. The results show that there is a correlation between the vocabulary of Chinese Phonetics Learning and order memory, but no relationship between item memory and the vocabulary of Chinese Phonetics Learning.In conclusion, these data show that order memory plays an important role in Chinese vocabulary learning.
