Objective To study the rates and influencing factors on Nonsuicidal Self-injury (NSSI) behaviors among 3 130 higher vocational college students, and to explore the relationship among emotional symptoms, alcohol use and NSSI. explore the relationship among Emotional Symptoms, Alcohol Use and NSSI, and to provide basic evidence for the effectiveness of preventive interventions. Methods A total of 3130 higher vocational college students who come from a higher vocational college (from freshmen to sophomore) were investigated by self-designed questionnaire. The contents of survey included socio-demographic characteristics, NSSI, physical activity status, tobacco and alcohol use, symptoms of anxiety and depression. Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the association between self-injurious and its influencing factors. Results The results showed that approximately 14.6% of students participants exhibited NSSI. The detection rates between genders, education-level of parents, family economic status, place of residence and the one-child status showed statistical significantly different (P<0.05). The rates of NSSI among students with anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms and drinking were 27.7%,21.8% and 17.8%, respectively, higher than those without (P<0.001). In genders, education-level of parents, family economic status, place of residence and the one-child status as the control variable, results of multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms and alcohol use were associated with increased risk of Nonsuicidal Self-injury (NSSI) behaviors, (OR=2.161,95% CI:1.683-2.773; OR=1.813,95%CI: 1.440-2.282; OR=1.528,95% CI:1.238-1.886).Conclusion NSSI among higher vocational college students should not be ignored. Anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms and alcohol use are risk factors for NSSI. This study suggests that a comprehensive intervention focusing on emotion and healthy lifestyle management would be helpful for the prevention of NSSI among higher vocational college students.
