With the implementation of the new curriculum reform and the ongoing pushing forward of the quality education, new opinions have arisen in the non-stopping debates about homework assignments, the reform to homework has been causing extensive concerns among parents, teachers, schools and even the whole society. Homework assignments are beneficial for students in their acquisition of the Chinese language and can serve as an indicator revealing students progresses to their teachers on a timely basis.Therefore, an intensive research on students’ language homework completion is of great value.The author once worked as an intern at primary school A located in the urban fringe area of Hohhot, where the author surveyed and studied the Chinese language homework completion of mid-grade pupils. In this article, the author sorts out literature materials on homework theory and then studies and summarizes the actual condition of mi-grade pupils’ Chinese language homework completion in school A through a combination of questionnaire,interview, and case study.This article is consisted of five parts. Part one demonstrates the necessity and the importance of such a research. Although pupils’ homework assignment is a hot spot raising concerns of the whole society but the study to its completion has been insufficient and remains as a weak point in the education field. For the study discussed in this article, its necessity and significance will be justified by its complementing role to the educational theory and be proven by its advising function to schools and teachers in homework strategy making. Part two reviews related literatures,sorts out main theories about homework, and sets the conceptualperimeter for homework assignment, Chinese language homework in primary school and its completion, and the characteristics of mid-grade pupils. Part three reveals the findings of the survey on current completion of Chinese language homework in primary school A, which shows that the situation is improving and evolving with most pupils capable of finishing their homework at time, though there exist some problematic variations regarding the quality of, attitude toward, and time spent on homework. The fourth part of this article discusses the existing problems of mid-grade pupils Chinese language homework completion in primary school A and analyzes the causing factors, which can be divided into four categories: students-related like attitude, habit,and interest; parents-related like attitude, family status and the way of their evolvements; teachers-related like the amount, difficulty,type of the homework as well as its correction and appraisement;and other, such as tutors, mates and class size of extra-curricular.The fifth and last part concludes the article by offering many pieces of advice to improve the completion of mid-grade Chinese language homework in primary school. The basic idea is that in light of the extension and the complex nature of the homework completion problem, it is essential for the parents, teachers,schools, educational institutions, and even the whole society to take cooperative efforts to arrive at a practical solution. |
