This thesis is devoted to carrying out a deeper investigation into the current situation of junior high school students' extracurricular English learning in the Internet context. With the popularity of Internet, more and more people contact with it and are involved in the Internet context. The rapid development of Internet and multimedia technology brings a brand-new mode for English learning, changing the learning contents and methods.Language learning is different from the learning of other subjects, for it focuses on overall language ability and needs the real language environment. With limited time in class, extracurricular learning provides a better platform for English learners, who can review knowledge after class and improve classroom learning. Internet not only changes the traditional teaching methods in class, but also becomes more and more important in extracurricular learning. Learning with the aid of Internet has become a new tendency in extracurricular learning. Internet shows more of greatness in its advantages with rich resources and strong function. In the basic stage of English learning, it is important for junior high school students to develop the ability of self-teaching. Because of their characteristics, junior high school students are more susceptible to the influence of Internet context. It is of vital significance to investigate and do some research on extracurricular English learning in the Internet context.This research dedicates to addressing the questions as follows:(1) What is the current situation of the popularity and the usage of Internet at junior high school students' home?(2) What is the current situation of junior high school students' extracurricular English learning?(3) What is the role for the Internet in extracurricular English learning?(4) What is junior high school students' attitude towards the Internet and extracurricular learning?(5) What is the role of teachers in extracurricular English learning? Junior high school students from No.2 Middle School Attached to SDNU were selected as the participants of the present research. The author mainly adopts literature method, questionnaire survey and interview method to research on the extracurricular English learning of junior high school students. From a questionnaire survey on some randomly chosen students, we learn about the current situation and problems of extracurricular English learning, and the attitude of junior high school students towards it. This study is devoted to helping junior high school students to improve the quality and efficiency of their extracurricular English learning.Based on the investigation into the current situation of extracurricular English learning, this research sums up the following conclusions:(1) The Internet is popular among junior high school students and they have used it in extracurricular English learning, so it is possible to construct a good Internet context.(2) Problems do exist in extracurricular English learning of junior high school students. Students pay more attention to the knowledge from textbooks and can not put them into practical application.(3) Students attach more attention to the extracurricular English learning, but with examination-oriented aims, they lack strong interest in learning.(4) With much emphasis on knowledge learning, extracurricular learning neglects the development of students' learning ability.(5) Teachers didn't play their role in extracurricular English learning.Some implications to English learning of junior high school students can be drawn from this study. Extracurricular learning and classroom learning can not be separated from each other. Internet plays an important role in the formation of language environment, which accelerates Language learning. With autonomous learning ability and web-based English learning environment, extracurricular English learning can be promoted effectively.
