The Impact Of Care Activities For Elderly Parents On The Health Of Caregiver In China

With acceleration of population aging,the demand for eldercare has become increasing.Under the inheriting traditionalcultural norms of patriarchal society,family care is still the main way to provide care for the elderly parents,adult children,bear the main elder care works.The impact on the health of caregiver will appear,along with the more care activities for elderly parents,howerer,the deterioration of aregiver health will trigger human capital accumulation and the intergenerational transmission of poverty,aggravating the burden of the next generation,which lead to the vicious circle between the intergenerational for population ageing.Whether care for elderly parents effect the self-reported health,cognitive ability and degree of depression of caregiver,and what extent will affect?Whether changes in the health care will have gender differences?Study on these issues not only benefit to insight the influence of family care to caregiver,but.also contribute to building social support networks.Therefore,based on the latest China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS)survey data and using the ordered probit model,this paper examines the impact of care activities for elderly parents on the health of caregiver in China,and inspects the gender differences on the self-reported health,cognitive ability and degree of depression of caregiver from social gender.This article is divided into 7 parts,there are main parts and conclusion,shown as followings.1.Study on the influential factors of whether caregivers providing the elderly care activities.This research constructed model of whether caregivers providing the elderly care activities,and made empirical analysis for the influential factors that affect likelihood of caregivers providing the elderly care activities.The results show that:(1)It has a significant impact for gender to whether caregivers providing the elderly care activities,meanwhile,compared with women,men are less likely to take care of parents,above 22.7%lower;(2)the education of caregiver have a significant positive effect on the probability of caring parents;(3)elderly parents with self-reported health which is general and bad,are more likely to be recipients of caring,in other words,whether the caregiver providing care depends the need of elderly parents;(4)the living distance between parents and adult children more closer,the elderly parents are more likely to receive care from children.2.Study on the influence of the caregiver of the self-reported health,cognitive ability and degree of depression after taking care of elderly parents.This article mainly investigate the influence of the caregiver of the self-reported health,cognitive ability and degree of depression after taking care of elderly parents,based on ordered probit model.The empirical results show that:taking care of their parents will significantly reduce self-reported health of caregivers,increase the degree of depression,and although there is a certain effect on cognitive ability,but the result is not significant.Compared with women,men have the lower self-reported health,cognitive ability and degree of depression.Meanwhile,age,education marital status living habbit,per income level and family scale of adult children also have significant influence on the self-reported health,cognitive ability and degree of depression.3.Based on the empirical study,explore the policy implications.By the conclusions of this paper we can draw the following inferences:the caregiver of the self-reported health,cognitive ability and degree of depression will be effected by providing care activities for elderly parents,at the same time,the influence of men and women also difference,due to the women bearing more care in the family.Thus,the targeting mechanism of social security system should be based on the individual rather than household,in order to promote sharing security interests of the family,reduce the possibility of gender inequality of female caregivers in economic security aspects,and make women enjoy the benefits of social security system equally.
