As a previous leading economic power in the world,Britain was trapped into economic difficulties after Second World War.This paper tends to study the post-industrial development of British production, the policies of British government and to assess their effectiveness.Previous studies have laid a solid academic foundation for this paper, consisting of studies on post-industrial theory, analyses on British production, discussion on British political and economic policies as well as reviews on cases of other post-industrial countries.Nevertheless, few paper provides a systematic and overall description of British government policies in post-industrial era.It is of significance because other countries, including China, can learn from them and adjust it to their specific circumstances, recovering their own production industry.Therefore.this paper focuses on analyses of the vertical development of British production.with the research methodologies like qualitative and quantitative analyses as well as historical review. The paper firstly gives definition of post-industrial society and production, and then describes the challenges that Britain has met in earlier stage of post-industrial society, including poor performance of production, nationalization, powerful trade unions and problems in the supply-side.Afterwards,it discusses British production in different periods. From 1979 to 1997 in Conservative period,British production went through lots of ups and downs. The policies implemented have brought British economy onto the right track with privatization and taxation reform, trade unions reforms and monetary policies. The Conservative government laid a foundation of policy for the following governments, changing status of British production in the world. In this chapter, coal industry was introduced to assess government policies in detail. From 1997 to 2010 of New Labour government,British production has become stabilized in its economy despite its decreasing importance.Labour government encouraged development of enterprises, innovation and advocated "Creative Industry." Their policies on production offer a sound and preferential environment for production, laying a solid base where British production earns its name in high-ended production. From 2010 to the present of the coalition and Conservative government,British production is in a recovery and stepped into a mature stage.British government conducted reindustrialization, green economy and economic diplomacy, creating jobs and further developed British advantage in high-ended market. This paper introduced automobile industry as an example. In general,British government policies on production remain changing and adjusting.British production could not recover to the old days, but it still remains competitive at present. Therefore,it is necessary to assess on its governments’ policies. It is unreasonable to copy British ways, but it is still of great significance for itself and for other countries.
