“The Beauties” is regarded as the first representative work of the courtesan novels, which is known for its sociology value of the boys' love theme and scholars and actors' association.“The Beauties” was completed during the mature period of Chinese classical novels, this paper focuses on the narrativity of its chapters' titles and parasitic poetry. The first chapter analyses the narrative art of the chapters' titles of “The Beauties” from three angles, such as the thoughts expression, characterization and narrative methods. The chapters' title is above the main text, which has functions as clue and creed. It contains authors' narrative thinking and their propositions, and contributes to shape characters. The second chapter analyses the narrative skills of the space refered in the chapters' titles of “The Beauties”.Spaces in chapters' titles could be mainly devided into two parts, physical spaces and the virtual spaces.Only analysing names of the space in chapters' titles is meaningless, only if combining with the specific text in the novel, our study would be valuable.Spaces are concerned with images, destinies, emotions and associations of the characters, and there is author's attention to social classes and dreams deeply hidden in the chapters' titles. The third chapter focuses on the narrative functions of the poetry appeared in “The Beauties”.Compared to the individual poetry, the parasitic poetry have more special literary features and narrative functions.Only if keeping harmonious relations with the novel's text, these poetry could have a literary value.Parasitic poetry can contribute to shaping characters and expressing emotions, even can summarize and foretell characters' destinies.
