A Report On E-C Translation Of Great Clarity

This is a report on E-C Translation of a Daoist research book.The report is based on the translation practice of the sinologist Fabrizio Pregadio's research book on Daoism-Great Clarity-Daoism and Alchemy in Early Medieval China,or simply Great Clarity for short.The translation report mainly contains five parts: the introduction to the project,the analysis of the source text,the introduction to the guiding theory,the case analysis and the conclusion.The source text is an academic work which contains many culture loaded words and long sentences,so it's really difficult to do this translation.Because there are some differences between Chinese and English and the source text contains many culture loaded words and long sentences,the translator selects Relevance Theory as the guiding theory of the whole translating process.Based on the standard of optimal relevance,the translation strategy of domestication and some translation methods,such as free translation and division,are adopted in the translating process to deal with the pronouns,culture loaded words,sentences in passive voice,sentences with many parentheses,the target text's holistic style and the target text's cohesion and coherence.The translation of overseas Daoist research work requires that the translator should do well both in languages and cultures.So before translating,the translator learned about the related Daoist culture carefully: Daoism is the indigenous Chinese religion which deserves so many sinologists' attention and study.The multidimensional and multi-perspective studies made by sinologists on Daoist culture have great reference value for today's domestic scholars to broaden their research perspectives.Through this translation practice and report,a better understanding of overseas scholars' perspective of Chinese culture and way of thinking will be obtained,which is helpful for us Chinese to understand better our native culture.Then we can do an in-depth study of our Chinese culture and promote it.
