| Free will has always been a hot topic of concern and debate in the academic circles. The compatibilists have made great breakthrough in the solution of this issue. The compatibilists believe that even if determinism is true,we may still have free will.Furthermore, some compatibilists even believe that the truly worthwhile pursuit of freedom includes the quest for determinism. The main purpose of this paper is to review the positive arguments put forward by the compatibilists.Furthermore,to evaluate the compatibilism through the review of these theories. And to answer whether or not the compatibilism is an effective solution to the problem of free will. This paper mainly includes five chapters. The first chapter is introduction,I mainly introduce the domestic and foreign research status of this problem. In the second chapter,I mainly discuss some basic concepts involved in the problem of free will, including free will, determinism, compatibilism and incompatibilism. The third chapter mainly discusses the viewpoint of the classical compatibilism.Classical compatibilism regard freedom as the ability to do what we want to do.They think that even if determinism is true, and freedom is true.Freedom can be true at the same time with the Determinism because freedom is dependent on Conditional Analysis. The fourth chapter is about the review of new compatibilism represented by Harry G.Frankfurt,Susan Wolf and Peter Strawson. Both the Hierarchical Desire Theories of Frankfurt and the Reason View theory of Wolf understand free will from the intrinsic mechanism of human behavior, while the Reactive Attitude Theories of Strawson understands free will from the point of view of human social practice. It shows that determinism and free will are compatible. In the fifth chapter,I put forward the evaluation of compatibilism.First,I explain the advantages of compatibilism from three aspects.Second,I present the limitation of compatibilism through the explanation of the analysis of free will by compatibilism. Finally,I point out that the way of understanding free will from practical perspective represented by Strawson has greater possibility of development. |
