| Mate selection is an important physiological,psychological and social phenomenon.Mate preferences in college students have become a hotspot by the researchers in recent years.Although many researchers have done a lot in it,there are still some shortcomings in these studies.It has been found that those factors can influence the mate preference: biological factors,psychological and behavioral factors and social factors.The most concerned factors are facial attractiveness,personality characteristics and social status.Therefore,this study explored the effects of facial attractiveness,personality characteristics and social status and their interactions on college students’ mate preferences.Research found:(1)in short-term relationship,as for low facial-attractiveness opposite sex people,participants who have love relationship for more than 6 months are more willing to have them than a person who has love relationship for less than 6 months;in the long-term relationship,as for high facial-attractiveness opposite sex people,graduate students are more willing to have them than the undergraduates,people who is the only child were more willing to have them than people who is non-only child.(2)in the short-term relationship,participants’ willingness of mate selection to high-attractiveness opposite sex people was significantly higher than the low attractiveness opposite sex people;in the long-term relationship,compared to people who have low facial-attractiveness,participants have a higher willingness to people who have high facial-attractiveness,and such likelihood was increased both in heterosexuality who has the high social status or the low social status.(3)In long-term relationship,the willingness of mate selection to people who have high facial-attractiveness by man was higher than by women;in the long-term relationship,the willingness of mate selection to high social status opposite sex people by man was higher than by women.(4)in the short-term relationship,participants’ willingness of mate selection to high social status opposite sex people was significantly higher than people with low social status,which exists in any combination of personality characteristics and facial-attractiveness of the opposite sex.(5)in the long-term relationship,compared to people who have negative personality,participants have a higher willingness to people who have the positive personality,and such likelihood was increased only in people who have high social status.(6)in the long-term mate,for people who have high facial-attractiveness and positive personality,the willingness of mate selection to those people by man was higher than by women;for people who have negative personality with high facial-attractiveness and negative personality with high social status,the willingness of mate selection to those people by women was lower than by men.The results show that: in short-term relationship,as for low facial-attractiveness opposite sex people,participants who have love relationship for more than 6 months are more willing to have them than a person who has love relationship for less than 6months;in the long-term relationship,as for high facial-attractiveness opposite sex people,graduate students are more willing to have them than the undergraduates,people who is the only child were more willing to have them than people who is non-only child;in the long-term relationship,facial attractiveness and social status have a greater impact on male college students’ mate preferences,and the personality characteristics have a greater impact on female college students’ mate preferences. |
