Adaptation is the necessary means to make up for the huge differences between the original and the target cultures.Born in different cultures, writers and the target language readers speak different languages and think in different ways. The only link between them is the translator. This thesis discusses the principle of adaptation from a translator's view, who works as the bridge of culture.A non-fictional novel written by the American writer Norman Mailer,Harlot's Ghost tells stories about the CIA.Harlot, the hero,is a high official of CIA.The big events told in this novel truly happened during the 1960 s,but the details are fictional. Therefore, this novel is between reality and fiction.Intelligence agencies in several countries and many historical figures are depicted in this book, with complex relations and obscure dialogues.Based on the theories related to adaptation and the translation practice, this thesis comes up with several adaptation skills and explains how these skills serve for the purpose of adaptation. These skills are proposed from the levels of words and sentences and with examples presented, the author concludes that effective adaptation can convey the deep information of the original book more clearly to the target readers, and enables the translation smooth and fit in with the language conventions of the target culture.
