A Study On The Translation Of TCM Terms In Shang Han Lun By N.Wiseman In Light Of Aixelá’s CSIs Perspective

Language,which is the embodiment of the cultural features of a nation or a country,is the major carrier of culture.Cultural diversity has become a barrier in cultural communication.Translation refers to both linguistic transformation and transmission and communication of cultural information.How to cope with cultural differences in translation and reduce communication barriers are the key points and difficulties in translation studies.Shang Han Lun,which plays an important role in the medical history of China,was compiled by the medical scientist Zhang Zhongjing in the Han dynasty.It includes 10 volumes and 22 pieces,among which 398 sections are involved.Culture-specific items(CSIs)in this classic are the important words embodying the unique understanding of human physiology and pathology from the perspective of TCM,so C-E translation of CSIs is the key point and difficulty in C-E translation of Shang Han Lun,and the translation quality directly influences the spread of Shang Han Lun in the English world.The thesis takes the Spanish translation theorist Aixelá’s taxonomy of CSIs as framework and the popular English version by Nigel Wiseman as research object,and then analyzes Wiseman’s translation strategies of CSIs in the translated version of Shang Han Lun.Drawing on Fu Yanling’s Dictionary of Shang Han Lun and the classification of CSIs by Aixelá,the thesis classifies CSIs in Shang Han Lun into six kinds: CSIs related to symptom;CSIs related to disease;CSIs related to etiology and pathogeny;CSIs related to therapy;CSIs related to philosophy;CSIs related to other Traditional Chinese Culture.Based on analyses,the thesis finds that Nigel Wiseman adopted six methods of Aixelá’s eleven translation strategies,in which orthographic adaptation,linguistic(non-cultural)translation,and extra-textual gloss belong to conservation strategy,and limited universalization,absolute universalization and naturalization belong to substitution strategy.Among these strategies,linguistic(non-cultural)translation and extra-textual gloss are used most,which belong to conservation strategy.And the use of these two translation strategies is in accordance with the translation principle of Nigel Wiseman.This thesis attempts to provide theoretical support for the choice and perfection of translation strategies on CSIs in Shang Han Lun,and provide new perspective for cross-cultural communication of TCM.At the same time,it also aims to offer methodological guidance to C-E translation of TCM classics,enrich translation theory of TCM classics.
