One of the obstacles in the translation of a historical and cultural text is to deal with Culture-specific Items(CSIs).In the practice of translating Cruickshank’s London,it’s found that the source text(ST)entails large numbers of CSIs,including historical facts, religious culture, lyrics, names of people and places, etc.,which are major hindrances to translation practice. This thesis aims to render the CSIs in the translation practice within the framework of the strategies proposed by the Spanish scholar Javier Franco Aixelá.Aixelá defines CSIs as the textually actualized items whose function and connotations in an ST involve a translation problem in their transference to a target text(TT),whenever this problem is a product of the nonexistence of the referred item or of its different intertextual status in the cultural system of the readers of the TT,which are classified as proper nouns and common expressions. His strategies of translating CSIs include conservation and substitution, each with several specific translation methods. However, the strategy selection is constrained by underlying explanatory variables of ST and TT,such as supratextual parameter, the nature of the CSI and intratextual parameter.By referring to Zhang Nanfeng’s adjustment to Aixelá’s framework, this thesis applies some of the strategies to the translation of the CSIs of the ST.It finds that due to the preservation of heterogeneity of SL culture and other variables, the conservation is commonly used, while the substitution is employed when the TL readers and relative variables should be taken into consideration. In other words, strategy selection is ascribed to the comprehensive effect of explanatory variables. On the whole,Aixelá’s strategies are applicable in rendering the CSIs of Cruickshank’s London, which can be a valuable reference for translating historical and cultural texts rich in CSIs,though proper adjustment should be made for specific texts.
