| In the 21 st century, when international educational exchanges are becoming more frequent, cultural differences are one of the main reasons for the difficulties in translating educational texts.Translators must not only have a comprehensive understanding of two cultures, but also master certain translation methods in order to take cultural differences into account and avoid mistranslations and undesirable translation effects. This translation material The Behavior Guru is an educational book.It contains many culture-specific items such as idioms, metaphors, and educational proper nouns that are challenging in translation. For this reason, this report analyzes the translation of culture-specific items in The Behavior Guru using Aixelá’s model for translating culture-specific items.According to Aixelá’s classification, the author analyzes typical cases from three aspects, namely "conventional proper nouns","loaded proper names" and "common expressions",and discusses the application of seven translation methods, including orthographic adaptation,linguistic(non-cultural)translation,extratextual gloss, intratextual gloss, absolute universalization, naturalization, and deletion. This report finds that the translation of conventional proper nouns and loaded proper names tends to adopt the translation strategy of conservation in order to reflect the linguistic and cultural features of the culture-specific items in the translation, and that the translation of common expressions tends to adopt the translation strategy of substitution so that the target readers can better understand the original text. This report analyzes and summarizes the characteristics and applicable translation strategies and methods of the culture-specific items in this translation task, and reflects on the translation process in the hope of providing a reference for the translation and study of culture-specific items. |
