| This is a translation project report. The source text for the project is Two by Two from Nicolas Sparks, who is the God Father of Pure Love Novels in America. The chosen part is the first three chapters of the novel. It mainly tells that the hero Russell Green had had all the things at his 32,including a wonderful wife,a lovely daughter and successful career, then he lost his job and wife within a couple of months and he had to take care of his daughter on his own and started all over again and finally he reaped great rewards. The novel shows many issues in this modern society, such as love, affection, reality and humanity. This novel draws from common people and their stories. The description of female psychology is quite exquisite, which stimulates the readers to think about the true meaning of love, especially the unconditional love between father and daughter. The language of this novel is quite colloquial.Although some words are relatively simple in use,the translator needs to deal with translation flexibly and tries to figure out its tone, emotion and writing style. In addition, there are some medical terminologies on labor in the chosen part. Therefore, the translator should look up relevant information to understand the writing background.Considering the feature of language of the source text, the translator chooses the theory of Eugene A Nida’s "functional equivalence" and some translation strategies such as amplification and omission.Based on the writing style, the translator further analyzes the practical use of the "functional equivalence" from the translation of words, long and difficult sentences and the psychological activities of characters,so as to make it easy to understand for target readers.Throughout the process of translation, the translator has great preparation and makes analysis on the difficulties in translation during the later modification. The reflection and summary of this practice help accumulate experience in translation for the future. In this practice of translating, the translator deeply realizes that translation should not be a simple literal translation. It requires a thorough analysis of the source text and a deep understanding of its cultural implication.Besides, with adequate command of two languages, the translator needs to apply translation strategy to practice flexibly, which thus conveys the true meaning of the author of the source text and ensures the high quality of the translation. |
