In the past, the academic circles explored the model of the population size and growth of the Western Han Dynasty, which was based on the population changes of some states. The samples were rare and general, and the rate of population growth was grafted with the rate of registered permanent residence growth. On the basis of thinking about the past research ideas of the past, the author tries to explore a new way of thinking on the study of the population of the Western Han Dynasty from the family population material neglected by the academic community, and tries to explore the tension between the population living space and the complex survival space in the context of a macro natural and political variable. In addition to the introduction and conclusion, this article is divided into three chapters. The first chapter studies with the family population material neglected by the academic community, which recorded the family population of the Han Dynasty by two Han books and unearthed bamboo slips on the family population of the Han Dynasty, and calculates the per capita offspring and the average generation interval of the Western Han Dynasty, and explores the trend of the internal growth of the Western Han population in the stable period of the stable period.According to the calculation of this article, the average number of children in the families of the Western Han is about 1.372.The average generation interval of the Han people is 26 to 29 years,Under the condition of stability, the natural growth rate of the Han population is about 11 per thousand-12 per thousand. Then, the author calculates the average population size of the family in the end of the Han Dynasty, and inspected the natural population growth rate in the two counties of the East China Sea and Le wave in the unearthed bamboo slips, which can be seen from the astonishing consistency. The side verifies the credibility of this trend of growth. The second chapter examines natural and man-made environmental variables that affect population growth in the Western Han Dynasty, mainly natural disasters and political control. As a natural disaster of direct survival, the natural calamities in the early Western Han Dynasty and the period of the Emperor Xuan Di were less, and the the Yellow River overflowed many times in the period of Emperor Wudi. The climate was cold. The temperature of the late years recovered with the plague of locusts. After the yuan Dynasty, the flood and drought was disaster, but it was not as violent as the Emperor Wu.In the field of political control, the author focuses on four aspects of the policy, the degree of social stability, the disaster reduction and the agricultural production which have a great influence on the population. The third chapter tries to investigate the real population size and the population growth rate of the Western Han Dynasties. From the account statistics of the first two chapters, the population growth of the Western Han Dynasty is divided into several intervals, which are corresponding to the initial construction of the regime, the stable period of climate and natural disasters, the period of large-scale foreign soldiers and successive famine, the stable period of political power in the middle period and the latter. The second wave climate change and social unrest period.Because of the unknowns of the"halving of household registration" in the last year of the Emperor Wudi, the author regards it as the end of this paper, and examines a neglected premise, that is,the change of Chinese border pattern caused by Emperor Wudi's opening of the county. So the author explored the new county and immigration problem of Emperor Wudi, subtracted this part of the population, and concluded that the total population in the year of Yuanshi was about 54857318.Further,I reckon that the population of the first year of the emperor Yuandi was roughly between 41506484 and 42973735,and the first year of the Emperor Chengdi may be between 34700139 and 35926786,and the number of people in the last year of the Emperor Wudi could be roughly calculated, which was between 22 million and 23 million 700 thousand. So it can be said that, the population of the late Emperor Wudi was do halved. This paper tries to study the population of the Western Han Dynasty from the material of the family population, the author was not to calculate the number of the population size and the population growth rate of the Western Han Dynasty, but to see the steady growth trend of the Western Han population with a new way of thinking. The real population growth rate and the population size of each stage can not be really calculated, but in the background of a macro natural and political variable,we can examine the real living conditions and the living space of the Han people, and roughly estimate the variables of the influence.
