After the Japanese army occupied Wuhan,it established a Japanese puppet regime to maintain its colonial rule politically;Economically, they began to plunder the resources of central China in a planned way. After the overall fall of Wuhan, all aspects of society suffered heavy losses, with the urban population of Hankou,Wuchang, and Hanyang towns plummeting. After the establishment of the Japanese puppet government,in order to consolidate its aggressive rule,it implemented a policy of restoration. The political situation and society were relatively stable compared to the period of melee warfare, and the population increased somewhat. However, with the outbreak of the Pacific War and the heavy bombing of Wuhan by the US military, the population of the three towns decreased again. The changes in the birth rate and mortality rate of Wuhan citizens during this period reflect the destruction of various aspects of society and the adverse impact of the war on people’s lives.During the entire occupied period, the number of deaths in Wuhan was far higher than the number of births, and the causes of death were diverse. In the Han Dynasty, the majority of the population was from Hubei, and people from all parts of the country were basically there, with Zhejiang,Anhui, and other places occupying the majority. The male population is significantly larger than the female population, and the adult population is significantly larger than the young and elderly population.Under the influence of various internal and external factors, the number of local people moving in and out of Wuhan during the enemy-occupied period was also extremely high. The increase of the Japanese population and the decrease of other foreign populations represent the division of power among the major powers in the Han Dynasty.Gender and age structure, educational structure, and occupational structure were key factors to measure the political, economic, and social development of Wuhan at that time.During the period of the Japanese occupation,Wuhan’s total urban population increased or decreased significantly, with a large floating population and an unbalanced population structure. This series of population problems were caused by the Japanese invasion and limited socio-economic development. The population issue is essentially a question of the relationship between population development and social, economic, and environmental development. The population problem,in turn, induced many social problems, which were important factors affecting the slow social development of Wuhan at that time and even for a period of time to come.
