| This is a report on the English translation of the Chinese literary work named The Cultural Creativity of the Chinese Literature in the 20th Century(from Section Three of Chapter Six to the Conclusion of the work)by Professor Li Jikai and others.Published by China Social Sciences Publishing House in December,2009,the bookgives an overall comment on the Chinese literature in 20th century,as a result of Professor Li Jikai’s academic research in the field of literary theories and history.Chapter six of the book talks about the cultural connotations of modern and contemporary literature education and discipline construction.In section three of it,the book focuses on cultural construction and the academic frontier of humanistic disciplines and sense of innovation,and the relationship between literature,culture and creativity,and it also pays attention to multi-communication and influence between literature and our own culture and the culture of other parts of the world.In conclusion,the book reviews the development of Chinese literature in 20th century and points out the difficulties and expectations that Chinese new literature will face in 21th century.Based on Chinese-to-English translation of the section three of the chapter six to the conclusion of The Cultural Creativity of the Chinese Literature in the 20th Century,this report attempts to illustrate and summarize the confusions,ideas,solutions and others in translation,guided by Skopos Theory,viewed from the linguistic and cultural perspectives.Linguistic perspective,translation skills and strategies for the translation of vocabulary,and syntactical problems and rhetorical ones will be discussed.The For terminology,the translator chose authoritative translations,and for non-professional terms and four-character structure of words,the translator chose literal translation or free translation.As for long sentences,the translations are based on the logical structures.When translating metaphors and parallelism,for the purpose of making the English translation of Chinese-wise sentences real English,literal translation,omission and other skills in line with target language context,to make the translations to be smooth and be away from being Chinglish are made use of.The report too focus on the translation of culture-loaded words.The translator has sorted out and categorized the culture-loaded words in the source text,and then selected the most frequent and the most representative three types of these words for case analysis.Different translation skills would be taken for different categories:transliteration with explanation,or literal translation,or free translation.The translator has acquired some thoughts provoking experience and drwan some lessons from this translation project.First,the translator has come to see more clearly the necessity to lay a solid foundation for translation theories,and to accumulate sufficient cultural knowledge.Second,translators should take their work seriously and translators should also consistently cultivate themselves and improve their bilingual competence. |
