| The interpreting activity can facilitate the communication between two parties who use different languages. As a form of interpreting, consecutive interpreting(CI)also plays an increasingly important role in exchanges among countries. The interpreter, therefore, should accurately and completely interpret the source language information in a clear and natural way. However, with the lack of relevant schema, the interpreter sometimes does not deliver a very good translation, which may impede the communication between the speaker and the audience.Based on the schema theory, this paper is a report on the author’s field practice as a consecutive interpreter. It aims to analyze the errors on the practice from the perspectives of linguistic schema, content schema and formal schema, and put forward suggestions to improve the performance. The analysis finds that:linguistic schema influences the interpreter’s listening and distinguishing of the accent, words and grammar used by the speaker,as well as his own expressive way;content schema, such as related thematic knowledge and encyclopedic knowledge, can facilitate the interpreter’s understanding of the original text;and formal schema will help the interpreter predict the organization of the text. Then, some strategies are provided for different kinds of schema, which require the interpreter to improve the skills of language learning and expression,to enrich his professional knowledge and encyclopedic knowledge, and to accumulate various discourse types and text structures. With storing the schema, the interpreter can quickly and accurately activate them to comprehend the text and do interpreting. |
