On The Application Of Schema Theory In Consecutive Interpreting

With the acceleration of globalization,China engages herself in increasingly frequent international exchanges,and interpreting activities have naturally become an indispensible part of these activities.Interpreting for foreign publicity purpose has often been seen on some formal occasions,such as diplomatic occasions and military affairs.Because of its unique political sensitivity and immediacy,interpreting on foreign affairs also brings considerable challenges to interpreters.In view of this,the thesis first discusses the feasibility of the application of the Schema Theory to foreign publicity interpreting,by introducing the Schema Theory,the main schema models and the characteristics of foreign publicity interpreting through literature review and summary of previous studies on the schema theory and consecutive interpreting.On the basis of the above discussion,this thesis explores the practical applications of "schema" in a foreign publicity interpreting process by analyzing materials from speeches of the current Chinese national leaders in 2017 and 2018.The significance and practicability of the Schema Theory is especially highlighted in the three stages of interpreting,namely,listening,memorizing,and expressing.Schema Theory can help interpreters generate anticipation,accelerate as well as deepen understanding of discourses in listening,strengthen the impression as well as reduce memory errors in memorizing and ensure accuracy of the target language,relieve the pressure while improve the efficiency of language output in expressing.Besides,the author also,in the hope of benefiting people in interpreting teaching and learning,ventures to put forward some strategies of improving the quality of foreign publicity interpreting,such as constructing new schema,activating prior schema,modifying deviated schema and reconstructing schema.
