This thesis is a translation report taking as the source text the first chapter from Chinese writer Yu Qiuyu's collection of proses Reflection in Seclusion.Yu's text centers around the rise and fall of Qing Dynasty by examining the interconnections between politics and culture.Drawing from the insights of cultural translation theories proposed by English literature-researcher and translator Susan Bassnett, the translated text aims at facilitating cultural communication by producing translations that would respect western aesthetic standards without sacrificing the introduction of Chinese culture.Accordingly, careful attention is directed on a range of choices of translation strategies and methods, especially concerning the translation of culture-loaded words, and the stylistic reproduction of the source texts, the two focuses deemed most important but difficult.Literal translation and amplification are thus adopted for culture-loaded words, while a combination of literal translation and free translation are used for stylistic reproduction.Arguably, the enlightenment of this translation practice is that the Susan Bassnett's notion of cultural translation is of great significance in guiding the Chinese-English translation practice, and that patience, preciseness, persistence are necessities for a qualified translator.
