| In the recent few years, as China is growing stronger in terms of economic strength and international influence on a daily basis, foreign media agencies have attached great importance to the development of China and its diplomatic relations with other countries.Reference News, as one of the two papers which can legally transedit news articles from foreign media, is aimed to faithfully spread reporters’ opinions, and provide reference through eyes of foreigners looking on China. Pages14to16of Reference News, namely,"Overseas Perspective","China Watch" and "China Panorama", transedit a large number of reports from The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Daily Telegraph, The Financial Times, etc. on a variety of topics concerning politics, economy, sports, education, legislation, science and technology, which are considered to be reliable sources for transediting study in this thesis.The proper name of "transediting" was raised by Karen Stetting in1989, who tries to cope with the grey area between translating and editing. Based on relevant theories of Eugene Nida, Peter Newmark, Mona Baker, Van Dijk, etc., this thesis proposes a four-dimensional transediting framework-interpretative transediting, circumventive transediting, reconstructive transediting and text-bound transediting-to implement case studies of19news articles from Reference News in the year of2011, and discusses detailed transediting techniques of addition, deletion, edition, interpretation, abridgement, combination and transformation.In addition to case analyses, this thesis explores further upon the criteria and purposes of news transediting, and discloses the political, economic, cultural and transeditor-specific factors hidden between the lines. Meanwhile, it points out several issues in transediting processes which are to be further improved, so as to pursue a just and objective approach of news transediting.In regard to the overall structure of this thesis, Chapters One to Three mainly come up with the origin and status quo of transediting, and outline theories and methodologies in its relation. Chapter Four introduces features of Reference News and discusses19news articles altogether in the use of four-dimensional transediting framework. In conclusion, Chapters Five and Six summarize academic value of this thesis, put forward influential factors in transediting procedures, and provide several suggestions for Reference News about t41ransediting in the future. |
