Conducting And The Treatment Of Yang Hongnian's Transcriptions For Children's Chorus

Yang Hongnian is an important conductor of transcriptions for children's chorus in China.At present,research on Yang Hongnian mainly concentrated on his children's chorus training and technique of adapting and transcribing specific aspects of musical works for children's chorus.However,less attention has been paid to his conducting of these transcriptions for children's chorus,This essay,therefore,has chosen to focus on three different types of pieces transcribed for children's chorus by Yang Hongnian as its object of study in order to analyze his techniques of conducting them.These include Nightingale,which had been adapted from the solo song;Flight of the Bumblebee,which had been adapted from the instrumental piece;and Dance of Youth,which had been adapted from a piece for mixed chorus.Based on the analysis of the music scores of the three works,with attention focused on the conducting techniques applied by Yang Hongnian to each one,the author found that he put different emphases in conducting the three transcribed pieces which have different themes.With Nightingale,his conducting highlighted the speed,control of dynamics and musical texture.With Flight of the Bumblebee,his conducting focused on the distribution of the vocal parts and the rhythmic aspect.With Dance of Youth,his conducting showed a prominent grasp of music style and melodic leaps and jump figures.Based on analysis of conducting of the above pieces,the author has found that when conducting transcriptions for children's chorus,the conductor's movements must be concise and clear and predictive movements must be accurate.The conductors' gestures have the role of leading the chorus members to sing.The conductor needs to have a rich trove of facial expressions.At the same time,he or she needs to pay attention to the singing of the chorus members,the training of their voices and their control of pitch,rhythm and tempo.Under the premise of ensuring the integrity of the work,the conductor carries out musical treatment of the piece.This study,therefore,provides some theoretical reference for the interpretation of Yang Hongnian's transcriptions for children's chorus.
