With the continuous development of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, many new Chinese teaching methods have been produced in recent years. The performed culture approach is one of the ways in which language and culture are used to learn the target language. And learners can learn the target language through personal experiences. In the eighties and nineties of last century, the Ohio State University Professor Galal Waler proposed and applied to practice performed culture approach. He emphasizes learning language in the target language culture. He proposes to strengthen learners language skills by creating situation and experiencing, and he has achieved good teaching results in the US.With the recent years China and the US more and more language cooperation projects, performed culture approach is also widely spread in the country.Sino-US cooperation in the CLS program is one of the widespread use of performed culture approach projects. The CLS project is a key language scholarship program established by the US State Department, which is carried out by the Ohio State University in the United States and the University of Suzhou in China to strengthen the learners' Chinese proficiency through eight weeks of teaching.By contrasting with traditional pedagogy and taking interviews with teachers and students,we found that the performed culture approach can effectively mobilize the learners to participate in classroom teaching and maximize the subjective initiative of the learners, thus greatly saving the teaching time in the classroom and improving the teaching efficiency of the classroom, and the teachers' timely assessment and feedback which is beneficial to the improvement of learners' spoken language and has unique advantages. Before the CLS program begins,we will divide into three classes based on the student's OPI exam. The course is divided into ACT and FACT two classes. In ACT class, learners use new learning language knowledge to perform in the creation of the scene, and teacher's record, correct problems and feedback. In FACT class, teachers explain the language rules, and then organize the learners in the target culture scene to study the language rules and practice. In the teaching process, the students exercise self-study ability with the help of pre-learning,practice language rules and exercise the language skills in class.Teachers assign tasks before class, focus on the feedback problem, efficiently use the limited class time.Through comparing students' OPI test results before and after the project,we found that students who participated in the CLS program generally improved their oral proficiency at the end of the project. But the study also found that there may be some problems in the performed culture approach. For example, the method requires that the number of classes can not be too much, and the students' self-learning ability and self-control ability are strict and so on.
