Translation Practice Report On The English Articles Related To Family Office From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

The economic and financial boom in China has witnessed a rapid growth of individuals and families with significant wealth.The financial sector,especially high-net-worth individuals and families,are paying great attention to Family Office(FO),a new model of wealth management superior to traditional private banks.The translation of English articles concerning FO can help raise public awareness of FO in China.As globalization grows,such translation can also contribute to the improvement of the risingFOs in China so they can better compete with their international counterparts.Under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory,this report focuses on the translation of English articles related to FO into Chinese.To achieve functional equivalence by accurate and smooth renderings,this report centers onthe analysis and restructuring of words,of phrases,and of English compound sentences.The context of words plays the most important role in helping the author analyze and identify theirmeanings.The restructuring of words is accomplished through translation techniques such as transplant,deduction and extension.In the level of phrases,the four major semantic classes of words by Nida(i.e.object,event,abstract and relations)can provide translators with a better understanding of the relations between words and with a solution to shun from the traditional conception of parts of speech in the English-Chinese translation.In analyzing and restructuring complex compound sentences,inspired by the concept of kernel sentences,the author breaks long English sentences into short simple ones to throw off the shackles of English syntax.This process facilitates the adoption of translation techniques such as splitting,cutting and reversing.This report hopes by translation examples to offer translation trainees a glimpse of feasible ways to avoid translationese and acquire faithful and natural renderings in the process of translating English articles related to FO.
