With the development of Internet technology, sharing economy,as a new business model, has been undergoing rapid growth in the recent years. Its essence lies in the integration of all offline resources that are reasonably allocated to different users through online platforms.China,in terms of scale and volume, takes the leading position in the world in developing sharing economy and has been turning out abundant texts on the topic. The English translation of such Chinese texts, therefore, will surely facilitate the transmission of Chinese ideas to the English speaking world.Within such a setting, the translator undertakes the task of the English translation of an excerpt from Sharing Economy 2.0: The Disruptive Change of Individual,Commerce and Society,co-authored by Cao Guohua and Wu Bo.The book,in plain language, explores the background of the emergence of sharing economy, its characteristics, foundation of operation, and future development. There has been no English version published,so this translation is both original and necessary.Although the translation task is difficult, the translator, under the guidance of Systemic Translation Theory and Functional Equivalence Principle, tackles the task through a systemic translation procedure and a complementary use of various translation methods or techniques in the translation of terms, complex sentences and longer textual fragments. In terms of translation process, the translator adopts a systemic procedure in line with the Systemic Translation Theory, including such stages as pre-translation work, source text analysis, target text production and post-translation work.In the pre-translation stage, the translator makes full preparations by collecting relevant background information and building a glossary of special words. In the source text analysis and target text production stages, the translator analyzes and understands the source text and designs and produces the target text in terms of function, meaning, and form on the levels of text, sentence, and word.In the post-translation stage, the translator first checks whether the source text is well understood, and then make sure that the target text is correct in form, adequate in meaning and functionally equivalent to the source text.In terms of translation methods and techniques, the translator, following the Functional Equivalence Principle, complementarily uses various translation methods and techniques in the translation of special words, complicated sentences, and longer complicated textual fragments. On the lexical level, the translator makes use various literal translation techniques such as transliteration, morphemic translation, and word-for-word translation in the treatment of special words. On the sentential level, the translator employs such free translation techniques as amplification, deletion, division, and transposition in the treatment of complicated sentences. On the textual level, the translator utilizes such free translation techniques as addition of various English cohesive ties to the target text in the treatment of longer complicated textual fragments. This translation task is practically important. In terms of its communicative function,it may promote the transmission of Chinese ideas on sharing economy to English-speaking readers. In terms of its translational function, this translation task may help to enhance later translators' proficiency through its experience in adopting a systemic procedure and using a complementary set of methods and techniques.
