As a bridge for international exchange and cooperation, interpretation has been playing an essential role in the rapid development of the modern society.Interpreting is a cross-language and cross-cultural communicative activity. It is a language transfer procedure that conveys the original message by using another language. However, interpreting is by no means a mechanical transference between the original language and the target language, but a dynamic language transfer activity that involves cultural, contextual, and traditional differences.Hence, the interpreter will inevitably encounter different barriers, such as language barrier, knowledge barrier, cultural barrier, and psychological barrier etc. This paper is a report on the author's field practice as a consecutive interpreter. The author analyzed the potential interpreting barriers from the prospective of context adaptation and puts forward effective coping strategies to improve the quality of interpretation. The language barrier, knowledge barrier, cultural barrier, and psychological barrier encountered by the author while interpreting for a Wine Appreciation Event in Ningxia have been analyzed and effective coping strategies have been discussed in this paper. Then, the errors made in the practice were discussed with the application of examples. The author also analyzed why those mistakes have been made and offered some suggestions to avoid those mistakes by using certain interpreting techniques, such as amplification and omission, parallelism, paraphrasing, and conversion etc. |
