Application Of Syntactic Linearity In English To Chinese Simultaneous Interpretation

Simultaneous interpretation is a demanding and complex activity,which requires multitasking.Interpreters should listen and interpret at the same time.Syntactic linearity is considered as one of the major principles in simultaneous interpretation.This principle can ensure efficiency and improve the quality of the interpreter's delivery.Structured in the form of a case study,this paper examines application of syntactic linearity in English to Chinese simultaneous interpretation at the “Global Partnership Seminar in Shanghai Second Polytechnic University” mock conference.By comparing my interpretation with the original speech,through analysis of major problems in the application of syntactic linearity in English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation,I come to the root cause of the problems,after which I provide possible solutions.The root causes of these problems are the position of auxiliaries,comprehension of subject clauses,among others.Solutions such as improving the salami techniques,focusing on processing information instead of words,and reasonable anticipation can greatly reduce hesitation and problems in English to Chinese simultaneous interpretation.This study will be beneficial for research in simultaneous interpretation.
