Shakespeare is the timeless,greatest English writer.During the course of cultural exchange activities on promoting Shakespeare's plays,it usually would be English expert delivering knowledge and appreciation guidance to Chinese audience,in which the interpreter plays an important role as culture and language assistant.The author of this thesis once participated in literature lecture on promoting Shakespeare's plays organized by Guangzhou Opera House,and interpreted for the lecturer Professor Duncan Lees.Based on this task,this report describes in detail the pre-task preparation,including the interview with the speaker,the background research in different categories,as well as the compiling of glossary.Then the task process was described too,from the rundown of the lecture to the post-task review.The author analyses the linguistic style of the speech and discusses the identification and equivalent rendering of it.The interpreting quality assessment is mainly conducted through questionnaires,whose result helps the author in tracking down the major interpreting quality indexes in the lecture setting are “fluency,logic coherence and information integrity”.In case analysis part,the author summaries the difficulties encountered and their coping tactics,including supplement according to the context,omission or zero interpretation to specific content to save time and reduce listener's pressure,and generalization to long segment with multiple information points.What's more,the roles of interpreter in such setting are also discussed.More than a language converter,the interpreter also acts as a facilitator to the speaker,an activator to the audience and a host to the lecture.This report hopes to draw some experience for future practice in the same setting.
