A Report On The Translation Of Prose

This is a translation report on eight proses excerpted from Cast eyes on the Green Mountains---a collection of prose by Hu Weihan,a writer who was born in Anshun,Guizhou.The eight proses are: Spring Festival,Dead Spirit Festival,The Wind Urges the Fall,in Dream Comes the Roll,Lost in Mystery,Never Bathe My Eyes,On and Under the Mountain,Cast Eyes on Jiuxi,and Sweet from Anshun Tea.His description in those proses is vivid and shows his sincere affection for Anshun.The translation is guided by the theory of translation as adaptation and selection.Its basic translation principle is multi-dimentional adaption and adaptive selection.Its translation method is three dimentional(linguistic,cultural,and communicative)transformations.This report analyzed the translation of the words,sentences,rhetoric,etc.of those proses from the perspective of their adaptive transformation in linguistics,culture and communicative intension.In the dimention of linguistics,this report analyzed the adaptive transformation of words,sentences,and rhetoric.The translation of words should be based on the deep understanding of the source text,and then adapt the meaning of these words in the source text,and select an appropriate word in English.The translation of sentences should be based on the well awareness of the differences between Chinese and English,and then adapt and select the sentence structure of English.The rhetoric should be remained in translation,given that it is important in presenting the style of the source text.In the dimention of culture,this report analyzed the adaptive transformation of words and sentences.Words needed to be transformed culturally are mainly those relating to culture of China and Anshun.Translation of those words should be based on the adaptation of the intension of spreading the culture of Anshun,and then translate them by selecting English words with same meaning,or by adding interlinear notes or footnotes.Sentences needed to be transformed culturally are mainly oral ones and those quoted from ancient proses and poems.Those sentensesshould be tanlated by adding some related information.The communicative intension of source texts includes spreading Anshun’s culture and landscapes,and showing their beauty of rhythms and forms in linguistics.Therefore,some information ill for this intension should be deleted or translated in other meaning,and some words and sentences can be translated with rhyme or balanced structure.
