Fu Sheng Liu Ji,written by Shen Fu,a famous writer in the Qing Dynasty,is an autobiography about the author and his wife.Holding an extremely significant role in literature of Qing Dynasty,it has been translated into different translated versions since it was published. As the studies on Shirley M.Black’s Chapters from a Floating Life — the Autobiography of a Chinese Artist were merely conducted by comparison with other versions. There exist some limitations in the research range as well as the study perspective. In consideration of this, the author intends to make a comparative analysis between the original text and Black’s translation from a new perspective of Thematology,a branch of comparative literature, aiming at finding out how the translator has changed the original theme by making some changes in such three parameters as motif, typical character and image. In order to make a comparative and comprehensive study on the changes of theme, this thesis mainly adopts literature reference method, comparative analysis method, inductive method and qualitative method.By adopting these methods, the author makes an overview about previous studies on translated versions of Fu Sheng Liu Ji and Thematology. From these studies, further suggestions as well as some limitationscan be summarized to make a contribution to the preparation for this thesis.Besides,a comparative analysis between the original book and Black’s translation is conducted to propose some major findings and further suggestions for the present researches. Moreover,an elaborate analysis on how Black has achieved her aim to change the original theme is carried out to make some evaluations about her translation in light of Thematology.Through elaborate analysis,it can be concluded that:(1)Black’s translation has made some changes in varying degrees in terms of motif, typical character and image to cater for the need and expectation of western readers;(2)based on these three aspects,Black has adopted different translation methods, such as omission, adaptation and addition,to change the original theme, which have some merits and drawbacks in light of Thematology;(3)there exist some possibilities and necessity in application of Thematology into translation studies to provide a new perspective for further study.Although the author has made efforts to achieve a relatively comprehensive study, there are still limitations and room for improvement.
