A Report On The Translation Of The Nightingale(Chapter One To Chapter Five)

This is a project report on the translation of The Nightingale(Chapter 1~ Chapter 5)written by Kristin Hannah,a New York Times bestselling author.Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of WWII and illuminates an intimate part of history: the women's endeavor and sacrifice in war.The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters,separated by years and experience,by ideals,passion and circumstance,each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival,love,and freedom in German-occupied,war-torn France.Based on the Theory of Cohesion and Coherence,this report will make an analysis of the difference of the cohesive devices between Chinese and English.Consequently,the author of the report adopts such translation techniques as omission,addition,repetition and conversion to translate these devices and make the version more fluent and coherent.The report is composed of five chapters.The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the purpose and significance of the project and the structure of the report.The second part introduces the source text and its author as well as difficulties in translation.This report analyzes the characteristics of the source text from three aspects — lexical features,syntactic features and discourse features.In addition,the translation of the proper nouns and cohesion and coherence of the text are deemed as difficulties in translation process.Chapter Three mainly describes the translator's preparation for practical translation and the revision of the target text.The fourth chapter elaborates typical cases and focuses on the translation strategies applied to solve grammatical cohesive devices and lexical cohesive devices,including parallel structure,thematic structure,reference,substitution,ellipsis and conjunction,lexical repetition,general words,synonyms,antonyms,hyponymy and collocation.The last chapter summarizes the experience gained from the translation project and points out the unresolved problems in the report.By analyzing the cohesive devices in two languages,the report holds that the coherence of the translation is greatly affected by the translation of cohesive devices.
