A Report On The C-E Translation Of "Tour Commentary Of Guangxi Botanical Garden Of Medicinal Plants" In The Perspective Of The Cohesion And Coherence Theory

This is a report on the Chinese-English translation of Tour Commentary of Guangxi Botanical Garden of Medicinal Plants.There appear a great number of culture-loaded words concerning traditional Chinese medicine in the source materials,which is not only a highlight but also brings a challenge to the translation task.The author makes a detailed analysis of the typical translation cases from the perspective of the Cohesion and Coherence Theory in which she elaborates on the strategies for the translation of the culture-loaded terms relating to traditional Chinese medicine.This report consists of five chapters.Chapter one is a brief introduction to the translation materials,the background of the task,and the structure of the report.Chapter two mainly describes the translation task in three parts,namely,the preparation for the translation task,the process of the translation as well as the feedback on the task.Chapter three discusses the research background of the report,including a review of the Cohesion and Coherence Theory and its application in translation practice and research.Chapter four is a detailed analysis of the translation cases in which the author analyzes the feasible ways of English translation of culture-loaded terms concerning traditional Chinese medicine,long sentences and segments in Chinese from the perspective of the Cohesion and Coherence Theory.Chapter five gives a summary of the content of this report as well as the experiences the author has drawn from this translation task.This practice shows that when it comes to the translation of the tour commentaries concerning traditional Chinese medicine,the borrowing of scientific names of plants,supplementary explanation and structure-borrowing can be three feasible translation techniques used to address the problems in translating the culture-loaded words and allusions of medicinal plants.The employment of several cohesive devices,such as reference,conjunction andlexical cohesion,will contribute to the English translation of long Chinese sentences so that the structural connection and the logical relation between English clauses can be achieved.As for the English translation of the segments,with the help of various cohesive devices,the logical relations between each part will be clear,thus the coherence of the text can be ensured.
