Liu Bannong(1891-1934),a pioneer of the New Literature during the May 4th Movement, made great achievements in poetry translation and therefore inspired some to both modern Chinese translation and literature.Previous studies on Liu Bannong's poetry translation are mainly conducted from a synchronic perspective and pay little attention to the logical relations of different aspects in its evolution.Besides,a systemic study needs to be strengthened given that previous scholars only selected some translated poems within a certain period or investigated Liu Bannong's poetry translation along with his novel translation,or just mentioned his poetry translation while listing his personal achievements.Lastly, little attention was paid to the profound influence of Liu Bannong's poetry translation. Therefore, based on a dynamic-synchronic-combined approach, this thesis observes Liu Bannong's poetry translation from three aspects by combining case analysis and qualitative analysis.Meanwhile, the thesis also employs the case study method to explore the characteristics and reasons of the evolution, use some translation theories and theories of modern literature to investigate its inspiration to modern translation and modern literature. In the first place, various characteristics and the logical relations among them are generally concluded based on a synchronic-dynamic-combined approach and case analysis. As the subject of his poetry translation was becoming more and more diversified, foreignization and literal translation became more frequently used in his later poetry translation accordingly instead of adaptation and paraphrase in his earlier times.Consequently,in terms of poetic and linguistic style,a prose style in vernacular Chinese took shape. In the second place, the reasons of the evolution are investigated at both macro and micro level. Both promotion of Literary Revolution and folk feelings as well as critical attitude of Liu Bannong all made a great contribution to the evolution.Besides, development of Vernacular Movement and efforts of many other progressives also promoted this evolution. Thanks to Liu Bannong's admiration and appreciation for the folk world, subjects and linguistic style of his poetry translation are becoming more and more down-to-earth.As animportant figure of Literary Revolution,Liu Bannong is always critical, making the evolution a gradual process. In the last place, some inspirations to modern Chinese translation and literary circle are observed according to some theories of translation and literature.Gradually being away from the traditional translation of the late Qing Dynasty,Liu Bannong employed the foreignization and literal translation to translate foreign poems with prose style and focused more on literariness, which issued challenge to traditional translation norms.Modernity of China's translation and literature began to emerge.Creation techniques drawn upon from foreign poems through translation bring some inspiration to the construction of New Literature.Modern vernacular Chinese further grew mature in the process of the construction and the Chinese literature began to be integrated into the world literature with increasing modernity. The inspiration of this study are tri-section.Firstly,characteristics of the evolution in subject, translation strategy, linguistic and poetic styles are closely connected. The coordination among the three both promoted each other and accelerated the construction of New Literature.Secondly,Liu Bannong's critical attitude towards Literary Revolution makes the evolution a gradual one, building a solid foundation to the construction of New Literature.Thirdly, evolution of Liu Bannong's poetry translation are inspirational at both linguistic and cultural level.Modernity of both China's translation and literature hence emerged and ultimately,Chinese people began to move towards modernity in terms of thoughts.
