Liu Bannong was a pioneer of modern Chinese literature reform. He had an important status on both advocating the theory of modern poetry and writing modern poems. But due to diverse causes, Liu Bannong had received neither enough recognition nor enough research in the history of new poetry. Because of Liu's indelible contributions to Chinese new poetry, further research on him and his poems is of certain academic significance. This paper will analyze Liu Bannong's poems from the angle of collision between Chinese and western cultures with the help of comparison method. To further establish Liu's status in the history of new poetry based on an analysis of the relations between his poems and poetics and modern Chinese literature reform. The introduction is a brief survey which includes: the background of culture and times, the research history and present condition of the study of Liu's poems, and an introduction to the point of view and the methodology of this study. The text mainly includes two parts: part I and part II.Part I discusses Liu's selective inheritance from Chinese traditional culture and folk culture, and gets a perspective of the pith of Chinese traditional culture which includes poetic spirit, the characteristics of folk culture and writing arts from his poems and poetics.Part II expounds three aspects learnt and developed from western culture. Firstly, Liu's theory of the building of poetic form; secondly, the relations between his poems and symbolistic poetry; thirdly, the influence of Tagore and Turgenev on Liu's interpreting and writing style of prose poems. The three sources of Chinese new poetry are tradition, folk and west, they are combined tightly in Liu's poems and they are inseparable from each other, I structuring the paper as this is just to get a clear skeleton for the convenience of academic research.
