A Report On The Translation Of Cast Away

Refugee crisis,due to regional conflicts,especially those in areas of Mid-east and South Africa,has long been a widespread concern in the international society.Cast away,written by Charlotte McDonald-Gibson and published in May 2016,is a book that records the real living situation of Mideast and African people who suffered from the regional conflicts.The author chose this book as the source text and translated a total number of 10,304 words involving three main characters,Sina,Majid and Nart,in the hope of presenting a vivid image of people’s dilemma,pressure,options and choices and thus give some thoughts about the war to the readers.The translator employs the Functional Equivalence Theory of Eugene A.Nida as the guiding theory and domestication as the strategy so as to adapt the translation to the reading habits of the target readers.Functional equivalence is explored from the perspectives of lexis,syntax and context,covering the translation of proper nouns,culture-loaded words,long sentences,passive sentences and scene text.Specific translation techniques such as annotation,conversion,amplification and inversion are used for the achievement of Functional Equivalence.The translator hopes a deep and thorough understanding of Functional Equivalence can be gained through the translation of this text.Besides,this report is expected to provide reference for the study of narrative non-fiction texts in the future.
