Quality Self-assessment In Huanqiu Financial News Translation:a Practice Report

Translation quality has been an important issue since translation activities began.Translation quality determines to certain extent whether information of the original can be effectively disseminated.Financial news disseminates financial information that is closely related to people's daily life.That is why the translation quality of financial news is of great significance.This report,based on domestic and international TQA(Translation Quality Assessment)models and with Malcom Williams' TQA model(Argumentation-Centered Approach)as the guide,describes the process of the author's quality self-assessment on draft translations(DT)of financial news.The emphasis of this report is laid on the errors discovered in the process of quality self-assessment.According to seriousness,these errors are categorized into three types,namely critical errors,major errors and minor errors.Critical errors include misunderstanding of themes and failure to properly deal with ideological information.Major errors include mistranslation of terminology and pretermission of essential information.Minor errors include lack of jargon,lack of cohesion and clerical mistakes.The author then puts forward corresponding solutions to those errors.For critical errors,translators should identify the macrostructure of the news to determine the theme and delete ideological information to eliminate negative influences.In terms of major errors,translators should adapt the terminology to specific area to determine the translation and identify the essential information to prevent information loss.As far as minor errors are concerned,translators should avoid them by adopting specialized expressions,adding cohesive devices and checking punctuation marks and numbers etc.This report explores financial news translation quality self-assessment in the hope of offering reference for translators of financial news.
