Abstract/Summary:
Translation contest has played an important role in the development of Chinese modern translation undertakings. Each year, a wide variety of translation contests are finding and providing a great number of translation talents in related areas. Among all those contests,"Han Suyin Award for Young Translators" is the most authoritative one in China. Funded by Han Suyin, this contest has been held twenty-five times till2014, which is also the largest and most influential translation contest in China.Juliane House is a famous German researcher in the research field of translation quality assessment. House published her model for translation quality assessment in1977. After that she integrated the latest development in that area into her revised model and published Translation Quality Assessment—A Model Revisited in1997, which has aroused echoes in the research field of translation quality assessment. Researchers from both home and abroad have studied her model and achieved attracting results. The quality of a translation greatly influences the realization of its purpose. Therefore, it is of great significance to apply this model to the analysis of reference versions of the contest. This research not only tests the feasibility of House’s model, but also tests those reference translations. It applies a comparative study on those chosen original texts and translated texts from the levels of a set of situational dimensions, textual profiles and functions in House’s model. Then, a qualitative translation quality statement is concluded. The research proves that House’s model is theoretically well based, with clear analytical procedures and careful attention paid to cultural and language differences. Meanwhile, some infeasible parts of House’s model are also found in this research. For example, some parameters overlap one another and the complex analytical procedures are difficult to be used widely. What’s more, this research has provided some insights into translation teaching and learning. The author of the present thesis hopes that, through this research, more attention will be paid to the application study of translation quality assessment, as well as the research of quality assessment in translation contests so as to further the in-depth study of translation quality assessment.
